The endangered species of hooded vulchers were daily fed in the grounds of the Senegambia Hotel at 11.30 a.m daily. Tourists (named category I didn’t seem to adopt) came and a talk was given. The vulchers could be seen throughout the day.

At my first visit to The Gambia in January 2012 with a friend we walked along the beach from our nearby hotel to witness this event. On this occasion I found the proceedings quite distasteful as I thought there were so many hungry local people around and here we were taking photos of vulchers eating. On this occasion I moved away leaving my friend to continue. My thoughts on this event changed as this, my 2017-18 trip progressed. The vulchers seemed to form metaphors (if that is the right word) for the different phases of my trip.
